I set my alarm for 6am this morning, quick coffee and shower and then Im ready to start my day.
I wanted to make sure I wasn’t late. My first lady can’t get out of bed without me as she is very frail and lives alone. Shouldn’t say it, but she’s my favorite.
I let myself in and call out her name. I hear her calling back saying “oh, thank god it’s you, I really need the loo”. I take her to the loo and whilst she is there I make her bed and get the clothes ready that she had picked out the evening before.
We get her showered and dressed all the time talking about the tv shows she watched last night. I make her some breakfast and then give her her pills. While I am completing her daily notes we carry on chatting and share some jokes. She brightens my morning as I am sure I do the same for her.
I leave wishing her a good day and tell her “Same time, same place tomorrow” and give her a big cheeky smile.
Then its off over the road to my other favorite lady. She is more of a welfare check. She is still very independent but I go in to check she is ok and to remind her to take her pills. Today she told me about her daughter’s birthday party that will be at the weekend, so we look through her wardrobe for something nice for her to wear. I hang her clothes up on the wardrobe all ready for her to put on at the weekend and tell her I will see her tomorrow.
I then go around the corner to my next client. He is my favorite Gentleman. He is widowed and is just really lonely and sad. I make him some breakfast and we sit and talk. He tells me about how he met his wife, it’s so romantic. I help him take his medication and then do his dishes for him and make him a sandwich so he has something for lunch. I tell him I will see him tomorrow and he wishes me a good day with a lovely smile.
My next visit, I knock and enter, no one is home. I get a bit worried and call the office. They then call the family and tell me that my client fell last night and was taken to hospital, but the son said she is ok and is just shaken up. I’m so glad she is ok as she too is my favorite. I lock up the property and then findmyself with a short break.
I sit in my car for a bit and then decide to go to my next client a little bit early, I can do a bit extra for him then without going over my time.He is up and dressed and reading the paper. He smiles when he sees me and offers a me a cup of tea. I agree and drink it whilst chatting to him and tidying his kitchen. He then tells me that his medication is ready for collection so I say “it’s your lucky day, I can go and collect it for you right now, I go off and collect the medication, when I get back I unpack it and check it against the MAR chart and log the visit and tell him I will see him tomorrow.
Well today I chose to work a half day, so I am off to meet one of my mates for lunch knowing that this morning, yet again, I made a difference to people’s lives. It can’t get any better than that!
